Richard A. Buschelman, age 82 of Omaha, Nebraska and formerly of Crofton, NE died on March 21, 2016 in Omaha. Inurnment will be on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Crofton City Cemetery with military rites by the Crofton American Legion Post #128. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home of Crofton, NE.
Richard A. Buschelman, son of Alfred and Wanda (Sawatzke) Buschelman, was born in Crofton, Nebraska, grew up on a farm nearby and was the eldest of the five children. He stayed busy as a young man by working on neighboring farms and even working one summer on the Gavins Point Dam project in Yankton, SD. Dick met Norma Jean Kusel of neighboring town Bloomfield when she and her father gave him a ride to town after his car broke down. They struck up a friendship that soon turned to love; and they married in 1953 followed by Dick joining the Air Force in 1954. He faithfully served his country twenty years as an auto-pilot technician with assignments in California, Alaska, Washington, North Dakota, Turkey, South Carolina, Massachusetts, and Vietnam, and finally retiring as a Technical Sergeant in Bellevue in 1974. Dick then worked twenty enjoyable years at Mutual of Omaha meeting and gaining many friends along the way.
Dick and Norma had three children - Debra, Rick and Dianne. He had many hobbies over the years-racing slot-cars in the 60's, raising rabbits in the 70's, small engine repair in the 80's, and one of his favorite things to make was turkey calls. He made many over the years and gave them all away. He headed up an annual Fall Turkey Hunt on the Santee Indian Reservation. His friends and relatives joined him for this favorite event from 1988 to 2013....with many more stories being told and good times being had than actual turkeys being shot! Dick was also a great athlete. He played and coached men's fast pitch softball, even coaching his daughters' in slow pitch in the 80's. He golfed regularly and was one heck of a bowler--playing league bowl starting in 1960. He loved music and singing along. He was a natural artist who could draw freehand, and could build and fix just about anything. He could tell a story with the right amount of fact and just enough embellishment to get the maximum effect...such as..."Must have been 85 Tom Turkeys in that flock!" An amazing all around guy. He is dearly missed. "I remember You...when my life is through and the Angels ask me to recall the thrill of them all, then I shall tell them...I remember you."
He is survived by his wife Norma; daughter Debra Buschelman, Bellevue; son Rick (Liz) Buschelman, Edmond, OK; daughter Dianne Buschelman, Carter Lake, IA; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren; sisters Alyce (Hank) Van Kirk, Lou McCabe and Linda (Paul) Gerber.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and brother John "Jack" Buschelman.
