Ora Etta "Shorty" Akers, 74, of Miami, OK, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Windridge Nursing after a long illness.
She was born June 18, 1941 in Craig County, OK to Bert Horn and Beaulah L. (Ivie) Horn.
As a young girl, she attended school in the surrounding rural districts of Welch. She was a graduate of Welch High School, Class of 1957.
In 1967, she moved with her family to Welch from Vinita, where she made numerous friends.
Shorty worked as a waitress for Clanton’s Café for a short time and later at Deward and Pauline’s Restaurant and Grand Café. She was also employed at Bob Haslett Rexall Drug for 22 years, Osborn Drug in Vinita for 2 years, and Home of Hope in Vinita for 1½ years before transferring to Miami.
Shorty was a very caring person. She loved to help people and was always trying to make someone comfortable. She was an active member of the New Life Nazarene Church in Miami. For 40 years, Shorty enjoyed being a greeter at the church, working with the Miami Grief Support Group, and doing church missionary work.
Shorty was preceded in death by her parents; 1 grandson, K.J. Horn; 2 brothers, Bill and Ben Horn; and 1 sister, Jane Parsons.
She is survived by 1 son, Kevin Horn and his wife, Kim, of Miami, OK; 1 brother, Gene Horn; 1 sister, Sue Riley; 2 grandchildren, Caiti and Clint Dismore; and a host of other family members and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the New Life Nazarene Church, Miami.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2016 at the New Life Nazarene Church, Miami.
Pastor Casey Hollingsworth will officiate. Serving as casket bearers will be Jeff Stewart, Glen Wiford, Mike Couch, Mike Addinton, David Patterson, and Thomas Hart.
Interment at Williams Timberhill Cemetery, East of Welch, OK.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to New Life Nazarene Church, Miami or the American Heart Association.
