Joan Mae Anker, 81, of Saginaw, died early Thursday morning, November 28, 2013 at Bay Shores Nursing Center in Bay City. She was born May 16, 1932 in Saginaw, daughter of the late Christian and Matilda (Bannick) Spindler. On May 28, 1960 she was married to Stanley E. Anker. He survives her. Joan was employed, before her marriage to Stanley, at Sunshine Biscuit in Saginaw. She was a homemaker most of her life and was a faithful member of the St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Freeland where she served on their Ladies Guild. She enjoyed playing Euchre with the neighborhood woman for over fifty years, taking care of her pets, reading romance novels, and knitting. Her favorite pastime of all was being “grandma” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving besides her husband Stanley are her children; Sandra L. Hall and her fiancée’ Eric P. Johnson of Augusta, GA; Jeffrey P. Anker and his wife Natalie A. of Unionville; and Patricia A. Anker of Saginaw; six grandchildren; Sarah Hall, Jeremy Hall, Shelby Anker, and Cole, Taylor and Brayden Anker and four great-grandchildren; David, Madison and Carter Martin and Peyton Desander. Also surviving is her brother, Ronald Spindler and his wife Bernice of Beaverton; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2013 from the St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 6185 Hospital Road Freeland. Rev. Spencer G. Biga will officiate with graveside committal services to take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Eastlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Saginaw. Mrs. Anker’s family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 9940 Saginaw St in Reese on Sunday from 2-7 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the services. There will be no visitation on Monday at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Freeland or Bay Shores Nursing Center in Bay City.
