JOHN WILLIAMS ABBOTT.

A brilliant young man has been suddenly cut down. John W. Abbott, of A. B. Griswold & Co., has been in attendance for several years at the Southwestern Presbyterian University, located at Clarksville, Tenn. Last summer he finished the literary course of the university with great distinction. He took the medal for oratory and was president of his class. At the beginning of the present session he entered the theological department of the university with encouraging prospects of being a brilliant and useful minister of the Gospel. About two weeks ago he was stricken with malarial fever. His case was not considered dangerous until Tuesday last. So sudden and swift was the disease at the last that he passed away at midnight of the same day. His remains were brought home by a committee of students of the university, in company with a younger brother, who was also a student at the university. They reached the city via the Illinois Central Thursday evening and were laid away in the Washington Street cemetery yesterday afternoon. The funeral services were held in the Prytania Street Presbyterian Church of which young Abbott was a member and were very largely attended. Rev. J. W. Walden, the pastor, was assisted in these services by Drs. Mallard and Palmer, of this city, and Drs. Summey and Alexander, chancellor and professor of the Southwestern University. The sympathies of the community go out to the grief stricken members of this large family circle.
