Son of John and Julia Tomay, brother of John L. Tomay of Colorado, A. G. Tomay of New York City, Charles V. and Joseph Tomay, both of Baltimore.
Originally studied for the priesthood, but joined the 1st MD Confederate Infantry, Co. E at the onset of the Civil War. Worked as an insurance collector for the Brooklyn Life Insurance Company in Baltimore, and in 1875 stated work as an attache for the Maryland Journal Newspaper. His funeral was held at St. Francis Catholic Church in Towson and was attended by representatives of the Maryland Journal.
