Jon Torsteinsen Aakre was born 1872 in Norway, the eldest of the four sons of Torstein Jonson Aakre (1838 - 1914) and Boel Torsteindatter Onarheim (1840 – 1921). Jon had three younger siblings, all brothers:
* Torstein Torsteinsen Aakre (1875 - 1956)
* Odd Torsteinsen Aakre (1878 - 1939)
* Johannes Torsteinsen Aakre (1881 - 1949)
While his three brothers all emigrated to the United States and settled in the American midwest, Jon remained in Norway, helping his father on the Aakre family farm.
In 1901 Jon married Anna Annfinnsdtr Børve. They had three children:
* Borghild Aakre Meland (1902 - 1984)
* Torstein Aakre (1907 - 1983)
* Albert Jonson Aakre (1909 - 1972)
Jon died in Norway in 1928.
