Bertha Anna Bopp was the daughter--the second youngest of eight siblings--of Baltimore County, Maryland truck farmer John Harman Gerhardt Koppelman (1862-1929) and Anna Wilhelmine Schaub Koppelman (1868-1938). She was always known as Bertie. Approximately 1922, she married ice merchant John Elmer Bopp (1895-1974), son of coal and lumber merchant John Bopp and Barbara A. Lang Bopp.

John and Bertie Bopp lived in the former home of the Gontrum family on Althea Avenue, near Belair Road, in Gardenville. They had three children: John, George, and Mildred Bopp Dutton. Bertie was a long-time member of the Jerusalem Lutheran Church Ladies' Aid Society.
