Sarah Elkins was the daughter of William Elkins (born March 22, 1824, Brown County, IN; died September 6, 1906, Jackson County, IN) and Rachel Cummins Elkins.

Sarah Elkins married George Matlock on March 4, 1878, in Jackson County, IN.

According to the 1880 Federal census, they may have been living in Ewing, Jackson County, IN, and had a five month old child Walter Matlock. The census is dated June 1880 and stated that he was born in January and was five months old at the time.

Jackson County had a death certificate for Walter Matlock, died February 5, 1896 in Kurtz, IN, at the age of 15 of double pneumonia. His burial place is not known, although Kurtz Cemetery is a possibility.

Their second child was Rachel Grace Matlock or Grace Rachel Matlock, born February 6, 1884, 1885 or 1886.

It is not known when the marriage of Sarah and George Matlock ended. It is believed that they divorced.

Sarah E Matlock married Mark McOsker Jr on January 19, 1888, in Jackson County, IN. They had three children:

Mary Pearl McOsker, born May 18, 1888 in Jackson County, IN
Nell McOsker, born April 28, 1891 in Brownstown, IN
Bryan McOsker, born November 11, 1895 in Jackson County, IN

This second marriage ended before 1900 as the Federal census for that year showed Sarah McOsker living with her three children, as well as Rachel and Alfred (Alford) Hendershot in Brownstown, IN.

Also in the 1900 federal census, Sarah Matlock indicated she had borne eight children with four living. That would include her three McOsker children, Rachel Grace Matlock Hendershot and her deceased son Walter Matlock. Sadly, the 1890 Federal census no longer exists so likely will never know who the other three were. Possibly they were other children from her marriage to George Matlock, although there might have been one or so from her McOsker marriage.

Part of a note in the Brownstown, IN, Banner for June 29, 1899 stated that Mark Mcosker, Jr had died on June 22, 1899 in West Brownstown, IN. He had been suffering from rheumatism. There was no obituary for him and Jackson County, IN has no DC for him.

Sarah McOsker married William Fry (born December 1853) on September 19, 1902, in Jackson County, IN. William Fry lived very close to Sarah McOsker in Brownstown, IN, according to the 1900 Federal census. He was widowed and had several children:

Oscar Fry born September 15, 1884
Pearl Fry born August 1889
John Fry born November 1891
Herman Fry born November 30, 1893

At some point in time, William and Sarah Fry must have moved to Terre Haute, IN, with all of their children.

Sarah Ellen Elkins Matlock McOsker Fry died on January 27, 1906, at St Anthony's Hospital in Terre Haute, IN. She died of nephritis, according to cemetery records and her death certificate. Her death certificate showed that she was 44 years old, spouse William Fry; father's name William Elkins; mother's maiden name Rachel Cummins.

Sarah Fry was buried on January 28, 1906. Cemetery records show that there is no headstone for Sarah Fry.

Obituary from the Terre Haute, IN, Tribune, dated January 28, 1906, page 2.

Mrs William Frye died at 4 o'clock yesterday morning at St Anthony's hospital. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock today from the residence, 908 south Fourteenth and One-half street. A husband and several children survive. Burial will be at Highland Lawn Cemetery.

Sarah's daughter Rachel Grace Matlock Hendershot Dennig Walters Jesteran or Jestician or however it's spelt was my great-grandmother. After her third marriage and divorce in 1911 from Willard Walters, she moved up to Indianapolis. She had dropped her first name Rachel after getting divorced from Great-Grandfather Alfred Hendershot and went by Grace Hendershot before she married Carl Dennig. They divorced in 1910 and Grace Dennig-Matlock married Willard Walters. They divorced in 1911. There are a number of stories about the two divorces in the Columbus Republic. Great-grandmother must have been fairly notorious by then so at some point - perhaps around 1912, she moved to Indianapolis and called herself Grace Walters. She lived in Indianapolis for about one or two years before she married an Italian immigrant named James - last name either Jesteran/Jestician or something, listed date of birth May 10, 1890 in Italy. Nothing further has been found on either person in Ancestry at all. Even a professional genealogist on Ancestry was unable to establish what happened to her.
