Orin W. Chandler, 72, local resident for many years, died Monday night in Community hospital here of injuries suffered when he was struck by a car Monday morning near the south edge of Bonners Ferry.
Mr. Chandler sustained head injuries and fractures of the arm and leg. He did not regain consciousness before his death, according to hospital attendants.
The county sheriff's office reported that the elderly man was struck by a car driven by Ralph Earle, who lives in Sandpoint and is employed here with the department of public assistance.
According to the sheriff, Earle, with Alex Stockman of Kootenai as a passenger was driving north on highway 95 near the Sims Implement company store south of town.
Mr. Chandler, it was stated, was walking in the same direction. As Earle started to pass him, Mr. Chandler turned to his left into the center of the road.
Earle said he tried desperately to miss the man but the front fender struck him, throwing him into the windshield of the car. The victim was rushed to the hospital where he did not regain consciousness.
According to Earle, the slick condition of the highway prevented him from stopping quickly and likewise hindered turning quickly.
At an inquest held Wednesday afternoon a coroner's jury absolved Mr. Earle of any blame in the accident, stating that he was not operating his automobile in a careless or heedless manner.
Funeral services will be held here Friday, Jan. 13, at 2:00 p.m. from the Whitney funeral chapel. Complete arrangements were not announced, pending arrival of members of the family from California and from Boise.
A complete obituary will be published next week.
