Frances was the youngest of 9 children born to Ransford Smith and Catherine Graves Howard of Lamasco, Lyon Co, Kentucky. She married James Madison Early in April 1866 and they had at least 14 children together, all born in Lyon Co. Sadly, 6 of them are buried as infants in Parker Cemetery in Lyon County.

Two of her older brothers moved from Kentucky to Brownwood in the 1880s or so and finally she and James moved out sometime between 1900 and 1910. It appears that most of their children followed them to Texas.

Their children were:
Lola L. b. 1867 (I cannot find her after the 1880 census. Did she also die in Kentucky?)
Walter U. b. 1868,
Catharine D b. 1869
Infant Son b. 1871-1871 (buried in Parker Cemetery in KY)
Minnie May b. 1872-1874 (buried in Parker Cemetery in KY)
Maggie Blanche b. 1874,
Clarence Yancy b. 1876,
Firman Ransford b. 1878,
Infant Son b. 1880-1880 (buried in Parker Cemetery in KY)
Nannie b. 1881-1881 (buried in Parker Cemetery in KY)
Mamie b. 1883-1883 (buried in Parker Cemetery in KY)
Nellie b. 1884
Lela Rebecca b. 1886 (why would they name one daughter Lola and another one Lela? Can any one shed more light on Lola?)
Tula b. 1887-1888 (buried in Parker Cemetery in KY)
