WANAMINGO -- A memorial service for Donald H. Raths will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo, with the Rev. Byron Meline officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Raths, 53, of Wanamingo, died Sunday (Oct. 29, 2006) at his home, following a six-month illness with cancer.

Donald Howard Raths was born Sept. 13, 1953, in St. Paul. He spent his early years in Claremont before his family moved to the Zumbrota area. He graduated from Zumbrota High School in 1971. On July 27, 1971, he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Wallaker. They made their home on the family farm, where he farmed with his parents. In 1978, they moved to Wanamingo, where he worked doing drywall. In 1980, he started working as a union operator at an asphalt plant, which is now Tiller Corp. He was a member of Operating Engineers Union Local 49 and Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed camping, boating and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jason (Amy) of Wanamingo and Sgt. Michael, U.S. Army, combat engineer, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; four daughters, Alisa Raths and Vanessa Raths, both of Wanamingo, Kristy (Dan) Vierling of Zumbrota and Megan (Jarvis) Groth of West Concord; his parents, Howard and Ruby (Fick) Raths of Faribault, Minn.; a sister, Peggy (Bob) Tri of Zumbrota; and a brother, Ron of Rochester. Other survivors include six grandchildren, Lucas and Brenden Raths, Allison and Blake Robles, Layne Groth and Grace Vierling.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home-Larson Chapel in Zumbrota, and an hour before the service Thursday at the church.
