Joseph W. Ady Jr. Prominent Mining Engineer, Dies
Joseph Wesley Ady, Jr., 24 W. San Miguel St., one of Colorado’s most noted mining engineers and former Cripple Creek millionaire, died suddenly of a heart attack Tuesday at the age of 71.
He was stricken while standing near the corner of Bijou and Tejon Streets. He was dead on arrival at Glockner-Penrose Hospital. Time of death was fixed at 3:45 p.m.
For many years he was associated with the fabulously rich Portland Gold Mining Co., and prolific producer, as well as a director of the First National Bank in the gold camp.
Graveside services for the well known mining man will be held at Evergreen Cemetery Thursday at 10 a.m., with Rev. Arthur W. Pierpoint officiating.
Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Olivia Parker Ady, and a sister, Miss Fay Ady, both of Colorado Springs.
Mr. Ady was born in Newton, Kan., Oct. 29, 1881, and came to Colorado Springs in June, 1895, with his father, a prominent Kansas attorney.
The first business enterprise of the nationally known mining engineer in Colorado Springs was in 1906 as president of the Johnson Furnace and Engineering Co.
Mr. Ady and Mrs. Olivia Parker Burns were married in St. Thomas Church in New York City in April, 1920. She was the widow of the late James F. Burns, one of men who discovered the famous Portland Mine in Cripple Creek in the early days of the camp.
He was a graduate of both the University of Michigan and the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University.
Mr. Ady was a member of the Yale Club of New York, El Paso and Cheyenne Mountain Country Clubs, Elks Lodge, American Society of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Mining Congress, American Society of Military Engineers, American Legion, former vice president of Colorado Yael Assn., president from 1923 to 1926 of Cripple Creek District Hospital Assn., and vice president of Cripple Creek Mine Owners Assn.
He was an Army officer in the Engineers Corps during World War I. At one time he was also president of the Peerless Oil Co., and had extensive mining interests in Arizona and New Mexico.
