Joshua (John Nathaniel "Joshua" Burge) lost his life serving with the CSA at The Battle of Pleasant Hill in Louisiana during the Civil Wary. When a group of men came down the road near his house, he stopped them and asked where they were going. They told him they were going to run the Yanks out of Louisiana and asked him to come along. He agree to go and went into the house to get his gun. His wife Elizabeth McCorguodale Burge asked what he was doing and he told her that he was off to war. He left her with 8 children at home, She may have been with child Alfanso. Most likely,, these men were part of the Second Texas Infantry. The wee going to join other forces to drive the Federals out of Louisiana.

He never returned home from the Civil War as he died at The Battle of Pleasant Hill was fought on April 9, 1864. 1,600 Confederates and 1,300 Federals died that day. The Federals lost the Battle of Mansfield but won the he Battle of Pleasant Hill. In the long run, however, the Confederates won as history indicates. He was buried at the Battle Site at Pleasant Hill, Sabine Parish, Louisiana. During the burial of the dead, a Federal soldier found a Masonic pin on Joshua and took personal belongings from his body. He kept the belongs thru the rest of the war and returned them all to Elizabeth after the war.
