ESTOPPEY, Royden Fitch
Royden Fitch Estoppey of Tariffville passed away peacefully on Thursday (February 16, 2012). Roy was the devoted husband for 61 years of the late Mary Catherine Cornish Estoppey. He was born on February 17, 1914 on his Uncle Chester's farm near Metuchen, NJ to his parents, Robert and Lilian Fitch Estoppey. He spent his early years doing what he would do his whole life - tackling challenging projects and dealing with all the women in his life. He stripped down an old Model T, much to the delight of his "gang" of friends and built a tennis court in the back yard. He also gave his three sisters, Margie, Dorie, and Ethel a run for their money by providing them with many treacherous adventures involving roofs and high tree limbs. With the help of scholarships and a lot of hard work, Roy headed off to Rutgers University. There he met Douglass girl Mary on a blind date arranged by Margie. They were love struck and remained so throughout their life together. Roy graduated in 1936 with an Electrical Engineering degree. In 1939, he and Mary married and moved to Berkeley Heights, NJ where they raised their three daughters, Carol, Nancy and Joan. His "girls" saw nary a workman around the house because Roy could fix anything, from hairdryers to cars to furnaces. In addition to working for his family, he worked hard for his town on the Planning Board and Board of Education. Roy pursued a career at Weston Instruments in Newark, where he designed meters and had many patents. He left as Director of Engineering to take the same position at Phaostron in South Pasadena, CA. Mary and Roy moved to Sierra Madre, CA in 1971. Typical of Roy, he became the "go to" man when it came to projects, both for the town and for friends, so much so that he was named "Citizen of the Year" in 1986. He was most proud of his work as President of the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association, where he helped bring the dream of a permanent float building to fruition after years of having tents take off in Santa Ana winds and for his work for the Historical Society. Roy and Mary loved to race around the Mojave Desert on their ATV's, scaring the dickens out of the rattlers and took many cross country trips to see family and friends in their camper. In 1998, Mary had a stroke, and they moved to Tariffville where he lovingly cared for Mary until her death in 2001. Roy moved to Seabury in Bloomfield but moved back in with his daughter, Joan and son-in-law, John where he resided until shortly before his death. Roy leaves behind his daughters, Carol Estoppey of Manhattan and Nancy Estoppey of Queens and Joan Nagy and her husband John; his grandchildren, Daniel, Anni, Khiem and Rosie Nagy, in whose lives he took great joy; his sisters Ethel Winters and Dorie Tidroski; his sister-in-law Alice Reyhner; his nieces, nephews and their children; and many friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Margie Christopher. Special thanks to Midge and Rob Christopher and Catherine-Anne and Michael Wininger who gave their Uncle Roy many hours of laughter; to Liz, Tahis and the staff of Governor's House for their great care and to Maria Maurer who was always there with loving physical and spiritual care for Roy when he needed her. Roy will be missed for his great sense of humor and loving heart.
There are no calling hours. There will be a service for Roy at Trinity Episcopal Church, 11 Church St., Tariffville, CT on Saturday, February 25th at 10 a.m. followed by burial at Simsbury Cemetery. Donations in Roy's name may be made to Kateri Medical Clinic in Nigeria through a designated donation to Trinity Episcopal Church. The Vincent Funeral Home in Simsbury is caring for the arrangements.
