John Hernry -mostly called Henry - was the eldest, born about four miles south of Schleiz, Germany, of Heinrich and Anna Maria Forster (Foerster) children. The family made the voyage to the United States in 1852, settling in Menomonee Falls, WI where the last siblings were born. His father was a weaver in Germany but became a successful farmer in Wisconsin.

Henry enlisted in Co. B, 16th Wisconsin Infantry in November 1861, serving in the Army of Tennessee. With his regiment he participated in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth and many skirmishes. He was disabled on account of illness and honorably discharged on a surgeon's certificate of disability in Jan. 1863. He returned home to farm.

Henry married Miss Henrietta Schumann in Menomonee in Feb. 1864. She was a native of Saxony, Germany and died Oct 1891 leaving five children:
Charles A. (Nov. 1864), Edward E., Anson A., Alma C., and Gilbert A.

Henry married again in Dec. 1892 to Caroline (Lina) Stebler and they had two children:
Lucinda D. (1894) and Esther H. (1898).

The family belonged to the Evangelical Association.

In 1891 the family moved to Menomonee Falls. He was a Republican in politics but never devoted much time or energy to political matters. He was a member of W.B.Cushing Post #115, G.A.R. A faithful soldier and an honorable citizen who enjoyed the esteem of a wide circle of Friends.

On the 1890 Veterans census Henry Forster is listed as a Private in Co. B 15 Regt. Wis. Inf. He enlised Nov. 12, 1861 and was dischargedJan. 15, 1863 and served 1 years 2 months 3 days. His post office address was Menomonee Falls and the disability Incurred was jaundice and he was discharged on Surgeon's certificate.
