The house of Dr. Levi Myers, a beloved local physician, was wrenched off its blocks and swept into the ocean. Myers and fourteen members of his "Family" drowned. He, his wife, three daughters, ages twenty-two to seventeen, and a son, age thirteen, received worshipful obituaries in the local paper. Other members of his "family" who perished-eight of his slaves-received no mention. It was noted only that his slave March survived.
