World War II Army Corporal Melvin Howard Stoddard of Morris will be honored tomorrow (Saturday) when the Tyler-Seward-Kubish Post 44 American Legion conducts its 84th consecutive monthly honoring of a deceased veteran.

Cpl. Stoddard entered the Army February 11, 1942 and served with the 3rd Battalion Armored Division and the 703 Tank Destroyer Battalion as a gunner/Anti-tank gun crewman. He served overseas in France, Germany, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes from September 16, 1943 through November 4, 1945.
He participated in the Normandy invasion and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal on Omaha Beach by General Rose, Commander of the 3rd Armored Division, for “voluntarily dismounting from his tank destroyer at the risk of his life from enemy fire and leading other tank destroyers into battle position.”
Upon discharge, November 14, 1945, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Victory Medal and the American Theater Campaign Medal.
Corporal Stoddard was born November 20, 1913 in the Lakeside section of Morris, the son of Howard and Edith Stoddard. He attended the James Morris School and Watertown High School. Before working as a construction worker he was a self-employed farmer. He was later employed by the Lakeside Construction Company. He was a member of the Middlebury Baptist Church and the grange, where he served as master.
Corporal Stoddard died at 79 on July 30, 1992 and is buried in the Lakeside Cemetery in Morris.
Two daughters, Jane Marie Stoddard and Ann Carr, both of Lakeside, a brother, H. Porter Stoddard of Morris and five grandchildren, survive him.
