Daniel is the son of Margrett "Pegg" McDonald and Bartholomew Maclin "Mack" Yager, born 1807 in Lincoln County, Tennessee; son of Reuben Yager, born about 1780-81 in Culpeper County, Virginia; son of Ann "Nancy" Render and John Yager, born 25 Nov 1750 in Culpeper County, VA; son of Elizabeth Crigler and Michael Yager, born 29 June 1728 in Spotsylvania County, VA; eldest child of Susanna and Adam Yager, born 1708 in Germany; son of Anna Maria Sieber and Nicholas Yager, born 1678 in Germany. In 1717 Nicholas, his wife, son Adam and daughter Mary immigrated to the Germanna Colony established by Lt. Gov. Alexander Spotswood in Virginia.

Daniel was born between 1841 and 1842 (age 18 on 1860 census) around Edinburg, Scott County, Mississippi. Between 1860 and 1862 he married the daughter of a neighbor, Clarissa "Cassie" Vogelin, daughter of Mary "Polly" Dennis and Philip Voegelin, listed 2 families away from the Yagers on the 1860 census. Clarissa is also listed in various records as "Ferissa" and "Theresa."

Daniel and his older brother Reuben Mecklin Yeager enlisted in the Army of the CSA on 18 Feb 1862, one month after their father did. All three enlisted in Vaiden, MS. CSA Army Record: Daniel Yeager, Co L, 1st MS Light Artillery. Enlisted 18 Feb. 1862. Died: 25 Aug. 1862 at Lauderdale Springs Hospital, Lauderdale Springs, Mississippi.

Cassie Vogelin Yeager gave birth to a daughter Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" Yeager in 1861. Bettie married Stephen Bailey in 1880 and had 8 childen. Cassie Vogelin Yeager's half-brother Moses Pinson was given Guardianship of Cassie and had her committed in Oct of 1868, to the Alabama State Hospital for the Insane (later called Bryce Hospital).
