She married Ben Pulliam Allred in Oct 1917 in Decatur, Wise County, Texas. In September 1919, they lost a son at birth and buried him in Montague County, Texas.

Then they moved to Erath County, Texas by 1920, when Ben was admitted to the State Bar of Texas on September 6, 1920. They had a son, Lloyd George Allred in 1921.

Ben was very busy building his law practice in various north Texas cities and they grew apart, divorcing in 1926. However, Nettie Mae was pregnant when they separated and divorced, giving birth to Billy Williams in May 1926 at the Baptist Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. Faced with having to support a five year old, a newborn, and herself, she gave Billy up for adoption. He was adopted by Frank I and Beryl (Rowe) Kidd and raised as James Lee Kidd at the Worth Ranch Scout Camp in Palo Pinto, Texas. Frank was a district executive with the Boy Scouts of America.
