The son of Adam J. & Susanna (Topper) Sanders, in 1850, he lived with the elderly Martha Douglas in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County. He married Charlotte Rebecca Lowe May 27, 1856, in Conewago Chapel, Adams County, and fathered Joseph (b. @1857), William (b. @1858), Margaret (b. 1860), James M. (b. 01/31/68, d. 09/09/68), and Flora R. (b. 04/04/75, d. 09/04/75). In 1860, he was a laborer living in Hamiltonban Township and stood 5' 8" tall with dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 5 as a private with Co. C, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. He was also drafted in Chambersburg February 28, 1865, mustered into federal service as a private with Co. C, 99th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 1, 1865.

In 1890, he lived in Liberty Township, Adams County. Union Cemetery in Fairfield, Adams County, also reported as burial location.
