Founder of the Burns family in America in 1851. His twin brother Laurence remained on the Burns farm in Coppanagh, County Galway, near Loughrea. The American branch of the family settled in Rosendale, NY. He became a naturalized citizen in 1852. Married Ann Freston in the Presbyterian Church in Rondout, NY in 1853. He is listed in the NY Census in 1905 living with his daughter Isabelle Dugan, but died in January 1910, so he missed the 1910 Federal Census. His grand-daughter Mary Dugan b. June 1906 remembered him fondly.
