Sgt. Aaron L Dearmond
Feb. 12, 1827
Aug. 19, 1864
Company K 30th Reg. NC Troops
Ramseur's Brigade Rode's Div. Ewells' Corps.
Army of Northern VA CSA
A valiant fighter in the cause of Southern independence. Mortally wounded at Snicker's Gap Va. July 18, 1864. He died 3 miles from his dear ones at home in lower Providence. One of the purist of knightly patriots. He bequeathed to his descendants a legacy of sacrifice and honor that trancends all time.
Deo Vindice
Family stone reads:
Sacred to the memory of
Aaron L Dearmond
Died Aug. 19, 1864
Aged 37y'rs. 6 mo's & 4 days
Among many thousand of the flowers of Southern chivalry who offered up their lives as a willing sacrifice upon our country's altar. He falls a victim
Unvail thy bosom faithful tomb
Take this new treasure to thy trust
And give these sacred relics room
to slumber in the silent dust.
NOTE: I found out that the Latin Phrase, Deo Vindice
was the motto of the CSA. Vindice means protector or Champion, so it probably is meant to translate to God as our Champion. I found this information on the site of David Wharton, who teaches Latin (among other languages) at UNC, Greensboro (NC)
