W.E.Jayne, was a Civil War veteran in Co C 52 Ill. Regiment (also played the fifer). (His fife is still in possession of family.) He reenlisted after his first tour. Battles included: Resaca, Kennesaw, Cross Roads, Dallas, Nickajack Creek, Decatur, and Lays Ferry, all part of the Atlanta Campaign, which began May 3, 1864; then Dec 21 marched to Savannah. Was part of the Grand Review in Washington, May 24, 1865. Mbr of Grand Army of the Republic. Graduated from Wheaton College and taught school for 20 years in Lyonsville, Illinois, served as a school principle in Chicago, as well as a teaching singing school, and an evening class for laboring men. Later moved to Iowa with wife, Elizabeth Vermilya Jayne, and children, where he worked in insurance. Descendant of the Jayne's of Long Island.
