Elizabeth, stage name Jayne Herbert, began her musical education under the tutelage of her school master and fine musician father, and singing in the church choir in Oak Park, IL. At age 21 received a paying position in a choir in Hyde Park. There she met and married Herbert Waterous, who also sang in the choir. She also received a scholarship for two semesters at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. They both auditioned for the team of Kohl and Castle, and were given a 9 month contract performing vaudeville. In 1908, Jayne sang with the English Aborn Opera as a prima dona, then with the Century Opera, once affiliated with the New York Metropolitan Opera. Joined the Gilbert and Sullivan company with husband, Herbert Waterous, touring the US and London. She played the Duchess in The Student Prince; revivals of Firefly, Irene, The Chocolate Soldier, and Babes in Toyland. She would spend summers with her parents, Wm and Elizabeth Jayne, of Independence, Iowa, with her three sons, Donald, Herbert, and Allen. Descendant of the Jayne's of Long Island.
