Born in Boonsboro, Washington, Maryland, he enlisted in the CSA on April 1, 1862 in the Company G, Virginia 7th Cavalry Regiment. He fought in the following campaigns:
- 10 May 1863 at Winchester, VA.
- 16 May 1863 at Upperville, VA.
- 16 May 1863 at Berry's Ferry, VA.
- 30 Jun 1863 at Westminster, MD.
- 01 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, PA.
- 02 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, PA.

On May 03, 1864, he transferred to Company Davis', Maryland 1st Infantry Regiment. He transferred again, on Jul 06, 1864 to Company M, Virginia 23rd Cavalry Regiment.

On March 02, 1865, he was captured at Waynesboro VA, and sent to Fort Delaware as P.O.W. He was pardoned on Sept 04, 1865.

In 1868, he had a liaison with Caroline E. Winegard, who gave birth to Lucy Jane on June 15, 1869. There is no record they married. She immediately married Pleasant Hunter Whitlock on July 16, 1869. [Lucy's dau., Carrie, told family historian Charles Sands, that Lucy was born out of wedlock]

On Sept. 21, 1869, he married Wyoming C Sprinkle, who gave birth to Emma Williette in October 15, 1870.

Census records list him as shoemaker, boot maker and cobbler.

His granddaughters (Lucy's daughters), Caroline Christine "Carrie" Clatterbuck Armstrong and Bertie Clatterbuck Steele are buried in the same cemetery.

His great-grandson (and family historian), Charles V. Sands, purchased his headstone.
