Edwin Martin Lowe passed away Thursday, November 2, 2006 at a local hospital. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 6, 2006 at First Christian Church with Dr. Tom Lyda officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Ed was born on February 1, 1922 in Phoenix, Arizona to Mr. and Mrs. E.T. Lowe. He graduated from Abilene High School and attended McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. While waiting to enter the Army Air Corp, Ed worked for area engineers at Camp Barkely, in Abilene, Texas. He met his wife, Kate Hudspeth, who was secretary to Chief Clerk. After completing Pilot Training, he flew 35 missions in B-17 with 385th Bomb Squadron, 8th Air Force, England. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Metal with 3 Clusters. He served for 22 years, active and reserve. Ed retired as a Major. Upon returning from European Theatre, Ed married Kate Hudspeth at First Christian Church on January 7, 1945 in Abilene. They were married for over 61 years. Ed was an extremely active member of First Christian Church for more than 60 years where he served as an Elder for over 45 years. He was also active in Disciple Men's Association, church choir and served on various committees. He volunteered at Dyess Hospital, Breakfast on Beech Street and the Red Cross. For 18 years, Ed worked for GMAC. He also worked for Tennaco, PCA for 12 years before retiring.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert. Ed is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kate Lowe of Abilene; one son, Joe Martin Lowe and his wife Bonnie of Austin, Texas; one daughter, Cindy Watson and her husband Skip of Lubbock, Texas; one sister, Ernestine Chamlee of Anson; two granddaughters, Kelly Ann Jenkins and her husband Mike, and Laura Lowe Freeman and her husband Kyle; one grandson Kevin Martin Watson and his wife Missy; four great-
grandchildren, Courtney, Caeden, Garrett and Brady; and several special nieces and nephews.
