Dr. Tanner was an American psychologist known for research into pedagogical techniques, child psychology and the testing of Spiritualist mediums. She received an A.B. from the University of Michigan in 1893, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1898. She was on staff at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. She published two books, "The Child: His Thinking, Feeling, and Doing" in 1904 and "Studies in Spiritism" in 1910.

She gave up psychological research when she left Clark in 1918, and remained in Worcester. For a time she operated the Majestic Theater in town. For years she was involved in the local Girls Club and Womans Club.
