In 1946 his family purchase Home Creek Resort at Huntington Lake California. The actual purchasers of the resort were his grandmother, Carrie E. Ratliff, his uncle Frank J. Ratliff, Sr. (known as Jerry), his wife, Rose and his parents, Richard G. Lutz and Nina Mardel Ratliff-Lutz (known as Mardel). Cleona Craig Lusk Omer, Jenny Craig Luck and Minnie Craig LaRoche were the previous owners; The “Notice of Sale of Stock in Bulk” was filed in Fresno County on Feb. 21, 1946. Even though it was a three-way partnership, his grandmother, Carrie Ratliff, was the boss.
His parents divorced in 1947 and his mom got his father’s share of the resort, in lieu of alimony I suppose. His grandmother died in 1949 leaving her share of the resort to his mother and Uncle Jerry. At the start of the 1949 season, the resort was a partnership between his mother and uncle. The lived at the resort from April to November and in Fresno, California the rest of the year.
In 1963 Michael moved with his mother and brother back to Redwood City, and he transferred to Sequoia High School in Redwood City. There on what he called the luckiest day of his life, he met his future wife, Carmen Linda Tesolin. On August 8, 1965 he married Carmen in the chapel at the U. S. Naval Hospital, Oakland, California where he was stationed until 1967
