"Lyman Hitchcock came to Alabama in 1849, from Chautauqua County [New York], and purchased a farm of 48 acres from the Holland land Company, which proved to be Indian land. After clearing it he was obliged to vacate, losing all he had invested. He was born June 16, 1802, married Sallie Cabot, and raised 10 children, four of whom are living, two in Alabama, Marie, wife of Abel Wight; and W.Q. W.Q. Hitchcock was born in Westfield [Chautauqua County], N.Y., January 2, 1842, came to Alabama with his parents, and married Alice, daughter of Rev. Benjamin Hunt. They had five children, all deceased. One, Walter, lived until four years of age.
