Great Grandpa Hamby, "Uncle Ben," to those who lived in Marietta. Grandpa to the rest of us. Was the Son of David C. Hamby and Olive Daniell Hamby. He was born in Walton County, we aren't exactly sure where thou. He was well educated by his family and may have even attended school some, thou we have found no records yet to say so.
His Siblings were: Micajah Leonard Hamby, Robert Thomas Hamby, Virgil A. Stewart Hamby, Tandy Kay Hamby, David Marcellus Hamby, Roxy(Rosa)Connelly Hamby, Peatus Theodore Hamby, Olive Adilida Augusta Hamby and Emerinda Talulah "Lula" Hamby Daniell.
His family finally settled in life in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia about 1859, maybe just before this as his Mother died in Cobb County at the end of August 1859 and his Father over in Clarke County on January 16, 1860.
Benjamin married to Emma Pope Hunton on Oct. 14, 1857 in Marietta. She was the daughter of Charles B. and Amelia Hunton. They had two children, David and Alice. Then along came the Civil War.
Grandpa served in Du Bose's Brigade. "B.J. Hamby", 2nd Lt. Company M, Phillips' Legion. He was wounded/shot once in the left forearm which caused him to have a very limited use of his hand the rest of his life. He was paroled at Appomattox, North Virginia, April 9, 1865 with The Rest of the Confederacy. He and his brothers all served proudly, even though thou they did not really "Own Slaves." They had family servants who were of African descendancy, and those folks happily took on the surname Hamby after the War. Ben lost one brother during this horrible war, David Marcellus Hamby.
After the War of Northern Aggression, his son, My Great GrandFather, William Virgil Hamby was born on July 1, 1866.
The family lost much during Sherman's march to the Sea (Atlanta). They did not loose the house but almost everything else was burned or stolen for supplies for the Northern Army. So there was a long period of rebuilding of their farm and holdings. This took a hard toll and Grandpa lost Grandma Emma on Feb. 12, 1876. They had six children.
These children were: David Coweta Hamby, Alice Lee Hamby Daniell, William Virgil Hamby, Lula Minerva Hamby Reed, Carrie Loutilla Hamby Hamby and Emma Mae Hamby Blackwell.
On 16 May 1878 in Marietta. Grandpa married Marguarite E. Frey, the daughter of William Martin & Narcissus Carolyn Thompson Frey.
And from his Second Marriage: Benjamin E. Hamby, Robert Ernest Hamby, Cleo Marcellus Hamby, John Horace Hamby, Carl Eugene Hamby and Chessie Aquilla Hamby Bentley.
Grandpa was prominent in Educational Affairs of Cobb County and he served as Chairman of the County Board of Education for several terms. He broke his connection only four years before he died. He endeavored always to distinguish between purely individual wants and those needs of his family circle. He loved peace and harmony. He delighted in the friendship of good people and he lived a quiet farm life. He died after a long illness at the age of 81.
He had twelve Children and many Grandchildren.
