Jack Lynass, 73, Spearfish, S.D., died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, as the result of an automobile accident near Spearfish.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, Nov. 8, with Fr. Tim Hoag, as celebrant. Burial will take place at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to benefit Children's Home Society, P.O. Box 1749, Sioux Falls, SD 57101-1749.

Jack Lynass was born July 23, 1933, to William and Geneva (Flickinger) Lynass in Winner, S.D., where he grew up along with two sisters and a twin brother. He graduated from Winner High School and attended South Dakota State University, Saint Olaf's College and The University of Oklahoma. He married his cherished and dearest love, Mary Ellen Steele, on October 17, 1953, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Clearfield, S.D. He was actively involved in the operation of the Lynass Ranches until they were sold. He worked for Farmers Home Administration for ten years and partnered in the Miller Livestock Auction Co. in the mid 1970s. Jack was associated with BankWest in Pierre for 22 years, where he was the Executive Vice President and served on the Board of Directors.

Jack was a stranger to no one and treasured the friendships he developed throughout his life. He had a strong commitment to community. Jack was a member of the Miller School Board for twenty years. He was active in the Winner Jaycees, the Pierre Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America and was proud to be an Eagle Scout. Other community involvements include the Knight's of Columbus and B.P.O. of Elks. Jack loved his church and was very involved in all aspects of lay ministry in the Catholic Church. He served under Governors Mickelson, Miller, Janklow and Rounds and was appointed to several state boards, including Governor's Office Economic Development, Chairman of South Dakota Finance Authority, SDDC and APEX Micro Loan Program.

Family was always number one in Jack's life. He was especially proud of his children, their spouses and their appreciation of "family." He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's school and sporting activities. Jack enjoyed ranching, pheasant hunting with his children and grandchildren, golfing with his friends at Spearfish Canyon Country Club, and entertaining on his houseboat.

Grateful to have shared in his life were his wife, Mary Ellen of 53 years; his seven children, Lori and Richard Haspel, Dallas, Texas; Lynn and Greg Grassle, Maple Grove, Minn.; Sherri and Bill Carney, Sioux City, Iowa; Bill and Tamara Lynass, North Bend, Ore.; Brett and Karen Lynass, Sturgis; Jeff and Jan Lynass, St. Petersburg, Fla.; and Jack and Lori Lynass, Rapid City; his sister, Kathryn Rutherford, Winner; his brother, Jerry and Kathleen Lynass, Waipahu, Hawaii; 13 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, colleagues and business associates.

Jack Lynass was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Alice Munson; and brother, William; one nephew, Greg Lentz; and one great-niece, Kari Kauer.
