Elon Alonzo Norton married Sarah Cary Wood in July 1847. He is listed in various census records as a farmer and/or a carpenter in the adjoining towns of Freedom and Farmersville in northeastern Cattaraugus County. In 1866 he purchased and rebuilt a sawmill formerly operated by Spencer Crowel on Clear Creek in the small village of Sandusky, NY. He is listed in the Freedom, NY Business Directory of 1874 - 75 as a "carpenter, proprietor of saw and shingle mill". In the 1880 census he is found in Freedom and listed as a farmer. In 1893 the mill had a capacity of 8000 feet and employed three hands, having expanded into planing and other services. This mill was later owned and operated by his sons Arthur and George after his death. Judging from his parent's census records he was probably born in or near Barre, New York.
