His parents were Buford Earl "Jim" and Vera (Engersol) Totten. Roger was the oldest of four children.
He graduated from Byron-Bergen High School in New York.He received his BS, MS, and PhD in Microbiology.
Dr. Totten would co-author with James F Shepard "Mesophyll Cell Protoplasts of Potato: Isolation, Proliferation and Plant Regeneration", published in 1977. As a results he received the 1978 Campbell Award.
He married Mary Jane Ivie in July 1987.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Totten, two brothers, one sister, one son and one daughter. He is preceded in death by both of his parent and a nephew Gerald Totten.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
