BERWICK, ME. - Military funeral services were conducted Sunday evening, for Miss Georgina M. Durant, R. N., 89, of Diamond Hill Road, at the Laing Funeral Chapel.
Miss Durant died late Thursday evening at the Frisbie Memorial hospital after a short illness. She was born in Margate, P.E.I., Canada, April 23, 1876, the daughter of William and Christian (Tuplin) Durant, and had resided here for the past 80 years.
She attended Somersworth schools and was graduated from Gorham Normal school in Gorham, Maine; and was a graduate of the Massachusetts School of nursing.
She served as a Red Cross nurse in France from 1915-1917; then joined the U.S. Army Corps, serving until her discharge, July 12, 1919. After her discharge at the end of the war, she served as district nurse here for many years.
She was a member of the Charles S. Hatch Post, American Legion; of the Dover Barracks, Veterans of World War I and the Lady Franklin Rebekah Lodge in this town.
She leaves two nephews, Lt. Col. Bernard J. Durant of Tacoma, Wash., and Herbert Durant of North Waterford, Maine; a niece, Mrs. Hugh Gordon of Dover, and two cousins.
Military services were conducted Sunday evening by the Charles S. Hatch Post, AL of Berwick, under the direction of commander Richard W. Stillings.
The Rev. Irvin E. Koelker, pastor of the Berwick Methodist Church, a navy veteran honorary chaplain of the post, gave the invocation and scripture reading.
Prayers were by Post Chaplain William Garland. who presented the flag to Miss Durant's niece, Mrs. Gordon. Harold E. Clark, a charter member of the local Post, delivered the eulogy.
Together with the delegation from Charles S. Hatch Post, a large delegation from the World War I Barracks of Dover and its auxiliary, attended the services; as did members of Lady Franklin Rebekah lodge; representatives from the American Red Cross, Leon W. Hartford Chapter American War Mothers, and many friends and relatives.
Cremation was held Monday at Salem, Mass., with burial of the ashes to follow this week at Kensington, P.E.I., Canada.
