Clyde was the fifth of seven children of William Ambrose and Ollie Pearl Wolfe Durbin.

Clyde volunteered for service in the US Army on 15 Apr 1944 at Fort Benjamin Harrison. He served in the 222 Infantry Regiment, 42nd Infantry Division in Europe and was captured in by the Germans in France and sent to Stalag 4B Muhlberg Sachsen. He was freed when The Red Army liberated the camp in April of 1945.

After the war, Clyde returned to Indiana, and worked at S.F. Bowser & Co. for 25 years.He married LaDonna Springer in 1947, and she preceded him in death. Clyde and LaDonna had two sons, Thomas and Keith.
