He graduated from Jackson High School as a member of the Class of 1949. He attended Jackson Community College for two years until enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged as corporal on May 12th, 1960.
In 1952, he married the love of his life, Barbara Lou Bell. Together they raised three children, Pamela, Sharon and Daniel. Norm and Barb celebrated 64 years of marriage on March 29, just 6 days before his death.
Norm worked in the construction field as a general contractor. In 1971, he started Normco Construction Co, which handled commercial construction jobs in and around the Jackson area. Through his life's work, he left his imprint on the Jackson landscape.
While residing in Jackson, he was also a member of Civitan International.
Norm loved fishing, boating and being on the Cheboygan River, but most of all he loved his family. In 2015 he welcomed two great grand children into his life with the births of Harmon Patrick Cook and Sophie Bell Farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughters, Pamela (John) Cook, Sharon (Kent) Farmer and son, Daniel (Jann). Grandchildren; Christopher (Ann) Cook, Patrick (Kelly) Cook, Kathryn (Thijs Verschuuren) Cook, Ryan Farmer, Shane (Mari) Farmer, Hillary Hinkle, McKenna Hinkle and Jackson Hinkle. Also, foster daughter Kay (Denny) Murk.
Sisters; Dorothy (Corey) Brautigam, Joanne (John) Sposito and Carol (Alvin) Cheesbro. Sisters in law, Donna Hinkle and Patricia Hinkle, brother in law, Tony Janiak. Also many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by brothers; Robert, Don, Arthur, James and Richard. Sisters; Josephine Malewitz, Genevieve Vannest, Florence Louagie, Lucille Janiak and Geraldine Young.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 23rd at 1:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the First United Methodist Church in Jackson. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers contributions to The First United Methodist Church, Jackson, Michigan, the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation or the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka KS. 66675 would be appreciated.
