Ann Lila Karo

November 25, 1927

April 14, 2016

Ann Karo was a collector. Those who knew her had the pleasure of reliving history through the thousands of antique bottles that covered nearly every surface in her home. From late nights spent digging by railroad tracks to the time she spent founding one of the nation's oldest antique bottle clubs, the Reno Sparks Bottle Club, in 1963, she was known throughout the region as an incredible source of historical knowledge and passion. Ann added collections of rare coins, wrought iron and antique dolls to her cache, which she proudly gifted to those she loved throughout the years. She was artistic and creative in everything she did, making stunning mosaics and pine cone wreaths, and growing dahlias that garnered fans from through the neighborhood.

Ann became a part of the Reno community in 1950, when she and her husband Burnard "Burnie" Karo moved from northern California. Annie, as she was known by most, grew up in the Stockton area and attended nursing school in Sacramento in the mid 40's (undoubtedly, one of her proudest achievements). She met her beloved Burnie at a dance in Grass Valley in 1945 after her roommate had been stood up. Annie attended the dance with her friend and as fate would have it, it was love at first site for the Annie and Burnie. The two quickly became engaged. They married April 14, 1950, upon Annie's graduation from college, and their first daughter arrived promptly in January 1951. Patricia Ann was soon joined by a brother, Steven, in 1953 and sister, Susan, in 1954.

Annie spent many years as an obstetrics nurse at the former Washoe Medical Center, helping usher in life for countless little ones before working with her eldest daughter to form one of Reno's oldest private preschools, The Little Golden Goose, in the early 80s. To say that she has positively touched the lives of thousands of children in our community is an understatement. She put her heart and soul into each and every child and was often heard saying, "I teach, I touch lives…" It was what she loved.

During this time, her own family continued to grow: adding two son-in-laws, and a daughter-in-law to the fold, four grandsons, and two great-grandchildren. Of all the things Annie collected, family was by far the most important. She loved her family deeply and generously and was happiest when she was giving to them.

Ann Lila was born November 25, 1927 in San Francisco and since that day, has sought to give and receive love, which she did until the moment she passed from this earth on what would have been her 66th wedding anniversary: April 14, 2016. As her family, we like to think that Burnie came home to get her that morning; taking her to celebrate together with him in heaven. We know you are enjoying it up there, Annie, with all those who have gone before you.

Ann Karo was preceded in death by her cherished husband Burnard Karo, son-in-law John Wanco, and adoptive family: brothers, Edward and Robert Forrest, father, Capt. Charles "Cap" Forrest, and mother Ina McDonald Forrest.

She is survived by her children Pat (John) Wanco, Steve (Andrea) Karo, Susan (Dan) Fissell, grandchildren Dustin Wanco (Betsy), and Conner and Evan Fissell, and great-grandchildren Cali and Elijah Wanco. And of course, her precious "babies," her two adorable dogs Tahoe and Truckee.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 30 at 2 p.m. at Napa Sonoma South in Reno.
