As a child, James moved with his parents to Marquette and graduated from Graveraet High School. He attended Northern Michigan University and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, and upon his return, he completed his degree at Northern Michigan University. For some time, he taught Geography at various locations in the Upper Peninsula.
After moving to Bay City, he owned and operated his own printing business. On June 4, 1988, he was united in marriage with the former June Donovan on Mackinac Island, and she survives him. James became a computer programmer and worked for various health related businesses until most recently, when he worked as a CNC Consultant at the University of Michigan.
In addition to being a private pilot, his hobbies included oil painting, operating Ham radios, and flying radio controlled airplanes.
He is survived by his wife, June Donovan Scherzer of Kingston; five children, Christine & Mike Swan of Gordonville, James F. & Laura Scherzer of Midland, Steve & Abby Scherzer of Midland, Elizabeth Scherzer and Noah Scherzer of Kingston; six grandchildren, Shawn, Naomi, Sidney, Austin, Avonlea and Emilia; sister-in-law, Judith Scherzer of Kalamazoo; and one niece and one nephew, Becca Scherzer & Pat Carlyle of California, and Jason & Sasa Scherzer of Texas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert.
In keeping with James’ wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at the Pineview Mennonite Church, Vassar, MI. with Pastor Roger Hazen officiating. Burial was at a later date in the church cemetery.
