Joe was the son of Robert L. Ohnmeiss and Margaret T. (Murnane) Ohnmeiss. He graduated from Williamsport High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after graduation. He retired from the army after 23 years of service. His enlistment included service during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He served with the Criminal Investigation Division of the Army. Upon retirement he was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a special investigator and was stationed in New York City. He was married to Margaret Ann Gohn/Gahn(?) of Williamsport who passed away in 1983. Surviving are three of their four children, Karen (Ohnmeiss) Wolfe of Plainfield, New Jersey, Robert Ohnmeiss of Caldwell, N.J., and Paul Ohnmeiss of Plainfield, New Jersey. Joe was predeceased by a son, Michael Ohnmeiss. Also surviving are five grandchildren and two sisters, Marguerite (Ohnmeiss) Norris of Williamsport and Lucille (Ohnmeiss) Hudson of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
He is survived by a second wife, the former Estelle Duran of Staten Island, New York, four stepchildren and five step grandchildren. As an athlete, Joe excelled in golf and baseball. He was a low handicap golfer. He was a starting pitcher on the U.S. Army baseball team in Japan and pitched against many of the major league teams visiting Japan for exhibition games during their off-season. He died at a Special Care Nursing Facility in Staten Island, New York. Funeral services were held at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Staten Island and interment was at the church cemetery. Joe was a good husband, father, soldier and friend. He will be missed.
