Milad Henry Abraham, 89 years of age, and a resident of Lorain, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2005 at Community Health Partners H & S Center in Lorain.
He was born February 8, 1916 in South Amherst where he was raised and graduated from South Amherst High School with the class of 1939. He attended Oberlin College.
He served during World War II in the Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater and also in New Zealand and Australia. Milad owned and operated the Milad Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealership in Amherst from 1952 to 1989. He opened his dealership in 1952 on the corner of Tenny Ave. and Church St. in downtown Amherst and later moved the dealership to Route 58 in 1966 and became the first major business on Route 58 in Amherst.
He was a civic minded businessman supporting the Amherst community activities and organizations. He was instrumental in facilitating the relocation of the Amherst Post Office from the Amherst downtown area to the Route 58 location.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, the Amherst American Legion Post #118, Amherst Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #1142, the Lorain Elks, the Lorain Amvets, the Amherst Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1662, the US Trotting Association, and the Cleveland Auto Dealers Association.
Milad was a humanitarian who loved his farm, his horses and his dogs. He raised and donated approximately 150 German Shepherd pilot dogs, trained by Pilot Dogs of Columbus, for the blind and Armed Forces. He also bred and raised standard harness horses for racing at Northfield Park, Scioto Downs, and tracks throughout the Midwest and Eastern United States.
Survivors include his wife, Fanny Abraham; his brother Charles Abraham; his sisters Katherine Gholson, Marge Joyce and Mary Makay; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ethel Amanda Abraham (nee: McQueen); by his parents, George and Amelia Abraham (nee: Labatt); by his brothers Nickolas, Michael, James, Makul, and Joseph Abraham; by his sisters Saide, Terry, Annie, and Martha.
Friends may call Friday, June 24, 2005 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Avenue, Amherst. Funeral services with the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard performing honors will be held at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Rev. Lawrence Martello, pastor will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
