The people of Hallowell, Me. were shocked Monday morning following Easter to learn that the beloved minister Rev. John W. Steele had passed away. He had preached the Easter sermon In his own pulpit and participated in the annual Easter service of Trinity Commandery Knights Templar which was held in his church in the afternoon after which taking a pleasant leave of the visitors he went to his room. A few hours later a friend called and found him on the floor unconscious. Medical skill availed nothing and the end came early Monday morning without his regaining consciousness.

The funeral services were held Wednesday March 26. Rev. L. W. Coons of Augusta officiating assisted by Rev. Wm. F. Livingstone rector of the Episcopal church a close friend of Bro. Steele. The church was filled to its utmost capacity and many absented themselves conscious that there would not be room in the building. The ministers of Hallowell were seated on the platform and Revs. John Evans of Gardiner and Asa M. Bradley of Portland of our own ministry were present. The body was sent to Baltimore, Md for interment.

Brother Steele was born In Baltimore Feb. 9, 1852, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Steele. He received his early education in the public schools of the city and Overlea Academy. After two years at the latter school, he entered Randolph Macon College at Richmond, Va where he was graduated in 1871. In 1872 he was ordained to the ministry serving the Methodist Church for several pastorates in Maryland. In 1886, he was elected Superintendent of the Central Union Mission in Washington, DC which position he held for sixteen years. He was fellowshipped with us in 1907 and came to the Hallowell church soon after his wife passed away some years ago and he lived a solitary life at his hotel. He leaves a son Martin L. J. Steele of Lanham, Md.

Brother Steele had a way with him that attracted people of all sorts They had faith in him He knew everybody in Hallowell and everyone loved him The large congregation at his funeral testified that his Influence was not limited to his own church He knew people and as Brother Coons happily expressed it. We were all just folks to him He was on the right side of everything and will be sorely missed by all who knew him and we regard his going a serious loss to our working force In Maine.
