BIRMINGHAM - Joel Paul Jacobs, age 80, of Birmingham, Alabama, was born on March 31, 1936 and passed on Saturday, June 11, 2016 from complications due to Alzheimer's Disease.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Clark Jacobs; daughter, Julia Laine Jacobs; sons, Jonathan Paul Jacobs and Joseph Francis Jacobs; brothers, James Francis Jacobs and John Joseph Jacobs; grandchildren, Lauren Lusk, David Jacobs, Paige Jacobs, Morgan Jacobs, Libi Jacobs, Meisi Jacobs, McKenna Mullis, Destiny Logan and Joseph Logan; and great-grandson, Anton Theodore Lusk.
A graduate of Florida State University and member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, he later earned an Master's of Business Administration from Auburn University and also graduated from the Air Force senior schools Air Command and Staff College and the Air War College.
During his 22 year career with the United States Air Force, he was honored with many awards and commendations including The Distinguished Flying Cross as the result of his skill as an Electronic Warfare Officer on B-52's during the Vietnam War. He went on to be elected as President of the Maxwell-Gunter Federal Credit Union and had a successful second career in commercial real estate. He was also the first manager of University Mall when it opened.
Joel was an All American swimmer in college and swam competitively into his late 70's, holding many national records. He also volunteered as an AAU Swimming official promoting the sport throughout the southeastern United States.
A man of many skills, he enjoyed extensive renovation projects at his and his children's homes. Very proud and supportive of his family, they enjoyed years of outdoor recreation including camping, boating and sports.
His Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas Catholic Church on Friday, July 22, 2016, at 1:15 p.m. and he will be buried at the Alabama National Cemetery near Montevallo, AL at 2:45 p.m. with military honors.
