Anne Dixon Speed Hallman, a retired social worker and lover of nature, words and people, died June 30 in Carthage. She was born May 14, 1925 on her family’s farm near Oxford to Charles and Annie Belle Dixon Speed. Her mother died when she was three months old and Anne was welcomed into the home of her uncle and aunt, Wilbur Lee and Hettie Frazier Speed on Hancock Street in Oxford. After graduation from Oxford High School in 1942 she attended Peace College and left for Washington to work as a fingerprint analyst for the FBI. She returned to North Carolina to work for Southern Radio in Charlotte, where she met Charles F. Hallman. They were married on March 27, 1947 in Due West, S.C. Anne and Charles settled in Marshville and raised four children: Susan Nelson, Julia Horne, John Hallman and Speed Hallman. Anne sought professions that brought her into contact with a wide range of people, including school secretary, newspaper advertising sales and social work. Her years as a social worker in Union County gave her great satisfaction. Charles and Anne retired and moved to Boone in 1985, where they managed the Westmont Apartments and formed friendships with hundreds of ASU students over nearly 20 years. Anne retired after Charles’ death in 2003 and remained in Boone until 2011. She never lost her sense of humor and curiosity about the world and she made friends with everyone around her.
