Clifford Freeman Hersey, of Mechanicsburg, PA, formerly of South Dakota and Maryland, passed away on April 23, 2013 at the age of 86.

He was born in Mitchell, South Dakota, the fourth child of Harry Bartell and Maude Helen (Doane) Hersey. In his late teen years, he moved with the family to the Washington, D.C. area. He attended Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, MA from where he graduated in 1953. He married Gladys V. (Trimbath) in 1950. He returned to the Washington area, where for many years he was a biology teacher at Surrattsville (MD) High School. He retired from teaching in 1983. He and Gladys were for many years actively involved at the Melwood Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed his extensive gardening activities, and hosting a broad network of family and friends at the “Hersey Ranch.”

In 1986 Cliff and Gladys moved to the Mechanicsburg, PA area to be closer to their daughter Cheryl and grandchildren. They immediately became active members of the New Cumberland Church of the Nazarene where Cliff taught Adult Sunday School classes and served on the church board. During the winter months they travelled south to be with their “family” at Dove’s Rest Park in Winter Haven, FL. Gladys (Trimbath), his wife of 61 years, passed away in November of 2011.

He is survived by his children, Cheryl Starr and her husband, Donald of Mechanicsburg, PA; Clifford B. Hersey and his wife Sue of Quincy, MA; Colleen Bryan and her husband Glenn of Columbus, OH; and Christopher E. Hersey and his wife Marielle of Sharpsburg, GA. Loving grandfather of nine: Beth Starr, Janelle and husband Peter, Jonathan, Joshua, Steven and wife Emily, Amber and husband Scott, Kyle, Micayla, and Rylen; and two great-grandchildren, Myles and Madelyn. Also surviving are two siblings, Helen Gisselbeck and husband Loren of Ohio and Elizabeth Wieczorek and husband Jim of South Dakota.

A Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the New Cumberland Church of the Nazarene, 16th Street & Brant Avenue, New Cumberland. There will be viewing from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday, April 26 at Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Way, Mechanicsburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Mr. Hersey’s name be sent to Eastern Nazarene College Class of 1953 Fund, 23 East Elm Avenue, Quincy, MA 02170.
