Merlyn L. Lewis, 85, of Litchfield died Friday, March 2, 2018 at CHI – Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are pending at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, March 5, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Hazard. Father Richard Piontkowski will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. at the church in Hazard followed by a Rosary service at 4:00. Burial with Military Rites provided by the Litchfield American Legion Post #293 and the Nebraska National Guard Military Honors team will be at the Litchfield Cemetery.

Merlyn was born January 21, 1933 at his grandparent's home in rural Sherman County, Nebraska to Melvin and Trena (Lang) Lewis. He grew up in the area and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1950.

He is a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Army 11th Infantry from 1953 – 1955.

On September 15, 1956 he married Maxine Kosmicki in Hazard.

He owned and operated a dairy farm near Litchfield and in his early years worked at the ASCS office in Loup City while still farming. He and his wife owned and operated Max's Market in Litchfield for 40 years until he retired at the age of 80. He was fondly remembered for his meat department. He also served as the sub mail carrier for Litchfield and Pleasanton for many years.

He served for many years as the mayor of Litchfield and was the Veterans Service Officer for the Litchfield area for many years. He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Hazard, member of the Litchfield American Legion where he is a past commander, served on the Litchfield Cemetery Board and on the Litchfield Village Board. He is also former member of the Litchfield School Board and past board member of Dads, Lads and Lassie Hunt.

He enjoyed polka dancing and listening to the Big Joe Polka Show. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping and especially enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids.

Surviving relatives include his wife of Litchfield; son, Mitchell Lewis and wife Susie of Tucson, AZ; daughters, Michelle Stover and Randy Allen of Kearney, Lisa Meister and husband Randy of Omaha, Sandy Wagner and husband Justin of Springfield, NE; grandchildren, Chris, Calvin, Cassie, Megan, Cordell, Tad, Jacob, Alex, Elizabeth, Alyson, Ryan, Braden, Abby, Kate and Jack; great grandchildren, Harlie, Paxton, Brody, Bronson, Vivian, Mia, Beckham, and Mason; sister-in-law, Rita Lewis of Litchfield and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his son, Anthony Lewis in 1971; parents, Melvin and Trena Lewis; brother, Cortez Lewis in 2013, brother's and sister's-in-law, William and Leona Schuda, Lavern and Judy Kosmicki, Elaine Anstine, Larry Lucas and Tom Kosmicki, nieces Holly Lewis and Sheryl Garrett.
