Byron Augustus Ogden was born October 1861, per the 1900 census. He went by his middle name and the nick-name of Gus. He married Jesse Donaldson, who was born in California about 1875, and they lived in Rawhide, Tuolumne County, California, where they rented from Adelia Moyle. Byron worked in the gold mines, and Jesse was a public school teacher. Jesse's mother was born in Louisiana, and her father was born in Wisconsin. In 1930, the couple lived in Oakland.

Byron was married to Mary Maude Nye, a native of Virginia City, Nevada, before marrying Jesse. They had four sons, Earl, Charles Gordon, Archie and Robert L. Their son, Archie Ogden, who was born May 30, 1891, and passed away Nov. 2, 1897 at Quartz Mountain, is buried in the Columbia City Cemetery.

There was no mention of the boy's mother in the newspaper, although she was alive. The November 6, 1897 issue of Sonora's Union Democrat has these two mentions of the boy: Died: At Quartz Mountain, Archie Ogden, son of Augustus, Nov. 2, and this Card of Thanks:

"Friends and acquaintances will please accept my heartfelt thanks for their many acts of kindness and sympathy in my sorrow over the loss of my little Archie." AUGUSTUS OGDEN.

The inscription on the boy's headstone reads as follows:

Son of B A & M M Ogden
Age 6 Years, 5 Months, 4 Days

After his son's death, Byron Augustus moved to South Jackson, Amador County, California where he worked in the mines. The 1900 Census indicates that his was divorced. He had two young sons living with him in Jackson. His son, Earl, was born December 1885, and his son, Charles Gordon, was born September 9, 1887 in Columbia. An elderly man, James G. Tiller, lived with Byron and worked with him in the mines in Jackson, while Chinese servant, Tom Lee, oversaw the cooking and household.

Byron's divorce from Mary occurred in the 1890s, and in 1896, Mary married another miner, Joseph Harten. In 1900, Mary and Byron's son, Robert Lincoln Ogden, lived with her and her second husband, Joseph Harten, in Tuolumne County. Robert was born in December 19, 1892, so the divorce would have occurred between 1892 and 1896.
