Friends may call between 4-9 pm on Sunday at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud and after 12 noon on Monday at the church. VFW Post 428 will meet at 6:30 pm on Sunday at the funeral home in St. Cloud followed by St. Paul's parish prayers at 7:30 pm.
Fritz was born on July 21, 1918 in St. Cloud to G. Herman and Clara (Foehrenbacher) Opitz. During WW II he served in the US Army as a railroad engineer in Alaska. He married Lucille C. Borgerding on Oct. 8, 1947 in St. Mary's Cathedral. He was employed as a railroad engineer for over 40 years retiring in 1982. He was an active member and past commander of the VFW Post 428.
Fritz will be remembered for the knives he made, the bouja he cooked and the stories he told, often while enjoying a big cigar and a pitcher of beer. His greatest passions right up to the end were hunting and fishing with his friends and family.
Survivors include his children: Charlie of St. Cloud, Carolyn "Cookie" of Kimball, Kristin (Bruce) Opitz – Rudolph of Kimball, Joseph (Sherry Newell-Opitz) of Cold Spring; 7 grandchildren: Rudy, Katie and Emilly, Freddie, Teddie, and Joey, and Ellie; great grandchildren; Onyckah and Mason; brother Adrian (Dorothy) Opitz of St. Cloud.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lou on March 30, 2005, 1 granddaughter Catherine; brothers: John, Frank and Ben, sisters: RoseMary and Carol.
