Elder son, born at Churchfield near Ballycastle.  Served in the 61st Regiment at the siege of Delhi 1857; Captain 1861; commanded a company of the 68th Light Infantry at the battle of Gate Pa, New Zealand, 1864; transferred to the 64th Regiment 1867.  Sold his commission 1868 and joined Capt. Henry Faulkner's expedition to Nyasaland, ostensibly to find Livingstone but in fact to hunt elephant.  Died of malignant smallpox near the Nyasaland/Mozambique border and was buried under a tree.
