Angus (Caleb's Mighty Black Angus, AKC # RN05676101) was a spirited Scottish Terrier owned by Caleb J. Barzelogna for his entire life. He was brought home at 8 weeks old to Palatka, Florida to live with his 4 year old master and an aging female black lab (Prissy, 11 years old) that was grieving from missing her companion Scottish Terrier (Scotty Mac) who passed away in July 2002. Prissy immediately adopted and guarded the infant Scotty like a grandson and stopped grieving. Mighty Ang was large for a Scotty (approximately 28-30 lbs, muscular and very active), and he grew to be fearless, extremely loyal to his Family and Pack, and loved life. By the time he was 2 years old, his inner circle was expanded to include an Irish Wolfhound (Shamus) and a Coton de Tulair/ Cocker Spaniel mix (Rhett Butler) that became his Pack. Mighty Ang watched me deploy and greeted me home from the Horn of Africa in 2005, Kuwait in 2010 and Camp Shelby, Mississippi in 2011. He loved eating heavily, rolling on a warm patch of lawn, riding in a pick-up truck with his head out an open window, and exploring his yard. He proved to be an accomplished escape artist, but never ventured far from home and was found and brought home every time he got out. Once, he escaped the yard and foolishly wandered into a neighbor's yard that had 2 Rotweillers, and was subsequently attacked by both dogs. During the attack, Angus was bit in the hip (both sides) and near the top of the left shoulder. Mighty Ang bit both attackers in their faces, surprisingly escaped them and ran to the neighbor's front porch and hid under a heavy desk where he kept his attackers at bay until I could get him out. Shamus hit the fence several times trying to get into the neighbor's yard to rescue Angus but could not jump high enough. Ang was subsequently taken to his vet and got stitches for his shoulder, antibiotics and lost his desire to ever escape the yard again. There was a time I came home from work, was in the process of changing out of my office clothes & duty belt when I heard my wife yelling to come quick, that Angus has a snake. I ran outside, grabbed a shovel near the front door and saw Angus with a 3' snake in his jaws behind its head, whipping it over his back and slamming it on the ground in the front yard near the Flag Pole. He also shook it violently from side to side, and after a minute of that, it was as limp as a toy rubber snake. Upon closer observation, I determined it was very dead, a blue racer, and Angus growled menacingly at it as if daring it to move. If it had been venomous, he would have gotten bit and might have died. He dearly loved Thanksgiving and Christmas, knew both times of the year were special and was excited when they came. He received a summer sausage every Christmas, and his favorite Christmas present was a black dog sweater with a white Jolly Roger on the back from his Momma (Susan Barzelogna). During the summer of 2015, Shamus succumbed to congestive heart failure, and both Angus and Rhett Butler, as well as the entire Family, were heart broken. Susan was the first to notice Angus showing signs of constipation and changed his diet in very early 2016, but without any change in the condition. Angus was subsequently taken to his vet and diagnosed with cancer during January. A specialist confirmed the disease as terminal bladder cancer which has matasticized to the prostrate and kidneys and gave Mighty Ang 2 months to live. However, Angus had other plans and set about enjoying daily life by eating heartily, riding in my truck or Susan's truck every chance he got, laying in the sun as often as possible and enjoying a roll in the grass after every release into his yard. His condition gradually worsened with his urine showing visible signs of blood and he had to be fed pumpkin pie or mashed yam to soften his stool so he could deficate. The last time he walked in his yard, he was still active and showed minimal signs of pain, but failed after trying several times to deficate and could not urinate other that leaking drops of blood. Although she did not want to, his Momma (Susan Barzelogna) took him to Animal Health Center in East Palatka and had him euthanized. She described the procedure as horrible and, other than losing her mother and step father, the worst experience with death she had ever had. Angus' love of life was very, very strong and even in his condition, he fought hard to stay with his loved ones. Susan never left him and was with him to comfort him as best she could. His master, Caleb, was absolutely crushed for 4 or 5 days and often lamented, "Why did this have to happen to my dog? Angus was a good dog. He didn't deserve this." Rhett Butler was devastated and continuously searched the yard for Angus and ran to the gate whenever a vehicle came, hoping Angus would be there. When I returned from Missouri, Angus' absence was immediately noticed and left all of us wondering if Home would ever be the same again. In human years, he lived to be 84.1 years of age. We buried him in front of the Flag Pole where he fought and killed the blue racer snake. God bless you, Angus. We miss you so much, and life will never be the same with you gone.
LIFE: 12 Years, 20 Days.
CAUSE OF DEATH: Bladder Cancer/ Euthanized
THE RAINBOW BRIDGE
"There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth.// It is called Rainbow Bridge because of its many colours.// Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, valleys with lush green grass.// When a beloved pet dies , the pet goes to this special place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather.// The old and frail are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again.// They play all day with each other. There is only one thing missing.// They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth.// So each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up !// The nose twitches !// The ears are up !// The eyes are staring !// And this one suddenly runs from the group !// You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her into your arms and embrace.// Your face is kissed again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.// Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated."

A DOG'S PRAYER
"Treat me kindly, my beloved Master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.
Speak to me often, for your "voice" is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps fall upon my waiting ear.
When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest house in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.
And, beloved Master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands."
