Dorothy Mae 'Honey' Hunter went home to be with the Lord on September 5, 2006. Mrs. Hunter has joined her husband, Willie James Hunter, Sr., her father, Ed Floyd, her mother, Roberta Flannigan, her sister, Eddie Lee Cobb, her brother, James Floyd and her grandson, Tyrone Lover in their heavenly home.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, with Rev. Matthew Lubin officiating. Burial will follow in City Cemetery (I.O.O.F. Section), directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
'Honey,' as everyone called her, was born on November 6, 1920 in Waskom, Texas as the 2nd child of Ed and Roberta Floyd. The family moved to Snyder, Texas during Honey's early childhood. Honey attended school in Snyder, which is where she met her future husband, the late Willie James Hunter, Sr. The two married on December 1, 1939, and began to build a very loving family of five children. In 1943, they moved to Abilene, Texas. There, Honey and her husband were both employed by Paymaster Feed Company, where she served as a cook. Honey was very passionate about helping others, so throughout her lifetime, she served many families including the Mead family, the Smith family, the Galbraith family, the Ramsey family, the McPherson family, the Gamblin family and many others until March of 2006, when her health began to fail.
Honey was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where she served as an usher, worked as a women's mission member, was a member of the bible band and attended Sunday school. Aside from Honey's strong faith in the Lord, she was an admired and cherished Mother-figure in the Carver neighborhood where she resided. Honey had a genuine concern for all children and adults that she knew. She was a great encourager to children and young adults in furthering their education and careers.
Honey was known for her vigilant exercise regimen, in which she walked several miles in many neighborhoods of Abilene for more than 30 years. Honey also loved gardening, sewing and fashion.
Honey Hunter is survived by her sister, Susie B. Edwards (Riverside, CA); daughter and son-in-law Barbara Ann and Theatlas Reagor (Banning, CA); son and daughter-in-law, Willie James Hunter, Jr. and Charlene (Banning, CA); son, Petty D. Hunter (Abilene, TX); daughter, Sandra Doris Lover (Banning, CA); son and daughter-in-law, Edward Dot "Bokie" and Juliette Hunter (Banning, CA); 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
